The Impact of Covid19 on Midwives
 Resources for our Global Community
The ICM team is committed to making sure midwives and women have the information they need to feel empowered and informed throughout this time of chaos and misinformation. This issue of our newsletter is dedicated to highlighting the resources and statements we’ve created to support our global community.

ICM Calls on Governments to Provide Personal Protective Equipment to Midwives
Deaths of midwives and nurses are often not reported by the media, yet midwives in countries most severely impacted by Covid-19 are dying because they contracted the virus while going about their regular work. In many cases, these midwives are young and otherwise healthy with their own children and families at home to care for. Their deaths are the direct results of governments neglecting to provide PPE to midwives.

Women’s Rights in Childbirth Must be Upheld During the Coronavirus Pandemic
The International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) is concerned that the human rights of women, their babies and their midwives are being violated by the introduction, in many countries, of inappropriate protocols for management of pregnancy, birth and postnatal care in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. These inappropriate protocols are not based in current reputable evidence and are harmful to women and their babies.

Drawing on recommendations from reputable sources and current research evidence for the care of pregnant women and babies during the Covid-19 pandemic, ICM has developed advice for midwives, other health professionals and health service managers about the care of women and their babies during the childbirth continuum.

Celebrating IDM Amidst Covid19
Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, we want to make sure our Member Associations and midwives everywhere are able to mark #IDM2020 without large gatherings or in-person events.
HERE ARE ICM'S SUGGESTIONS FOR CELEBRATING IDM

Designated Covid19 Section on ICM Website
We’ve collected statements and evidence provided by UN agencies and other health professional partners and created a designated section on our website where our Member Associations and other partners can access information they can trust. Here, our community can find credible evidence-based advice and information on topics such as breastfeeding, pregnancy and Covid19.

ICM President on ‘Good Birth for All’ Podcast
The Good Birth for All podcast is a combination of news and stories from maternal health leaders, birthworkers, and midwives.

On the most recent episode of the podcast ICM President, Franka Cadée, discusses the state of the world's midwives and the upcoming 32nd Annual Confederation of Midwives Congress. Please note, this interview was recorded prior to the Coronavirus pandemic.

50,000 Happy Birthdays
Project Saves Lives in East Africa
Building off the success of the 10,000 Happy Birthdays project in Malawi and Zambia which, from 2014 - 2016, increased the capacity of more than 10,000 midwives and other providers to save lives at birth, the 50,000 Happy Birthdays project, beginning in 2018, has trained even more providers in Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Tanzania.

As this project comes to a close at the end of March, we will be sharing photos, stories, and key accomplishments from all three regions on ICM social channels. A huge shout out to our project partners, Laerdal Global Health - your support has made this project a resounding success and ultimately helped save the lives of countless mothers and babies.
