Midwifery Services Framework (MSF) Implementation Pays off in Zambia

ICM was pleased to celebrate alongside Zambian midwives and women this past month after Zambian Minister of Health, Sylvia T. Masebo, outlined a commitment to ensuring women have access to well-trained and well-regulated midwives within the country’s newly launched 2022-26 National Health Strategic (NHS) Plan.

This achievement comes following years of collaboration between ICM and its member association the Midwives’ Association of Zambia (MAZ) in the implementation ICM’s Midwifery Services Framework.

ICM YML Becomes Newest ICM Head Office Member

ICM Head Office is pleased to welcome Jeffthanie Mathurin as ICM’s new Digital Communications Coordinator, sitting within the Advocacy and Communications team. Jeffthanie is a Haitian registered midwife and a current member of ICM’s Young Midwife Leaders (YML) Programme.

Supported by Johnson & Johnson, the YML Programme empowers young midwives to become politically conscious and involved in strengthening the midwifery profession.

"It is my greatest pleasure to advocate for midwifery and women’s health, wellbeing, and autonomy,” said Jeffthanie. “I’m grateful to ICM and the YML Programme to have developed my capacity and prepared me for the opportunity to do this now on a global level.”

World Bank Accepting Proposals for Pandemic Fund

Women continue to become pregnant and give birth during pandemics, and midwives are critical to any pandemic response, especially when the response must move to communities. The World Bank has released the first Pandemic Fund Call for Proposals that includes investing in pandemic response, and that means investing in midwives.

The call is open to Ministries of Health and/or public health authorities and is an excellent opportunity for midwives’ associations to co-design interventions that can include midwives and midwifery care. The deadline is 19 May.
