Global healthcare organisations call on all governments to defend access to safe abortion care
The United States Supreme Court decision to dismantle Roe v Wade and roll back 50 years of access to safe abortion care is a catastrophic blow to the lives of millions of women, girls and pregnant people who now face the prospect of being forced to continue pregnancies. It is a decision that will negatively impact the maternal and neonatal mortality rates for years to come.
Ensuring access to safe, quality abortion is imperative. Abortion is recognised as essential health care that must be provided by governments. Access to safe abortion is also a human right. Attacks against reproductive freedom are attacks on democracy and international human rights standards, on individual freedoms and the right to privacy, and they set back progress towards gender equality.
ICM has joined over 100 global healthcare organisations in calling on all governments to defend access to safe and quality abortion care. We encourage our member associations and partners to do the same.

ICM Member Associations: submit your favourite #MidwifeMemory to be featured on ICM’s social media channels
As ICM continues to celebrate its centennial, we’d like to take the opportunity to recognise our Member Associations’ (MAs) accomplishments and memories. We want to celebrate YOU!
We are currently running the #MidwifeMemory campaign, the purpose of which is to showcase ICM accomplishments, historical moments in midwifery, and key milestones from ICM MAs and partners. To submit your favourite #MidwifeMemory, fill in this simple form with the necessary information. ICM will then share your memory on ICM social media channels, along with the hashtags, “#ICM100” and “#MidwifeMemory.” Then, you can re-share ICM’s post–don’t forget to use the hashtags!
Wondering what memory or milestone you should share? Consider times when a key piece of midwifery legislation was passed in your country. Did you once have a particularly memorable IDM celebration? Maybe a member of your MA has a favourite birth experience! We want to hear whatever memory stands out to you and makes you proud of your association.

The More Happy Birthdays project comes to an end in Rwanda
From August 2021 to June 2022, the More Happy Birthdays project has improved the provision and experience of care for women and newborns in Rwanda by training more than 1500 maternal and newborn health providers in life-saving skills. The project was supported by Latter-day Saint Charities and implemented by ICM in collaboration with Rwanda Association of Midwives (RAM) and Maternity Foundation. The project built on successes and lessons learnt from the 50,000 Happy Birthdays project implemented in Rwanda, Ethiopia and Tanzania from 2018 to 2020 which trained more than 4000 providers to prevent and manage the major causes of maternal and newborn death which occur during childbirth.

The Moth Global Community Program Personal Storytelling Workshops
For those with personal experience related to being a midwife or advocating for midwives.
The Moth, the internationally acclaimed organization dedicated to the art and craft of personal stories told live, in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, are holding two storytelling workshops in September 2022 to develop the personal storytelling skill sets of midwives and midwife-advocates as a way of highlighting the life-saving, life-promoting impact of midwives around the world, as well as the challenges they face in providing quality care.
Through its Global Community Program, The Moth works closely with individuals around the world - elevating stories that highlight world issues, dissolve stereotypes, and bridge social divides. Guided by Moth instructors, workshop participants shape selected life experiences into well-crafted stories, which may then be presented to peers and to the world at large.
This opportunity is ideal for people who want to be better public storytellers and who have a passion for the role that storytelling can play in creating social impact.
