Next up in our Stronger Together series, ICM will convene a global panel of midwives to discuss the need to establish well-resourced and adequately supported leadership positions for Midwives at all levels, including a Chief Midwife in Government. Through this candid conversation with midwife leaders, we hope to demonstrate to advocates and decision-makers how such appointments, when resourced appropriately, can reduce the number of maternal and newborn deaths in their country.
We often talk about the importance of having women in leadership and decision making positions in global health. This is equally true when it comes to Midwives. We believe that midwives must lead, with women, in health facilities, in communities, in government, in public bodies. Midwives leading with autonomy and resource at all levels is fundamental for upholding women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights, as well as avoiding the danger the conflation of midwifery and nursing causes health systems. Join us for this important discussion.
